The Scene
JUNE
(not turning around)
It was taped behind the silverware drawer. Your name on the front. Her handwriting.
CALEB
June. Put it down. We can talk about this tomorrow, when we've both slept.
JUNE
You knew. You just told me what's in it without me opening it.
CALEB
She called me in March. She was lucid, June. Whatever you want to believe, that day she was lucid.
JUNE
March. I was here in March. I was here every day in March. You couldn't find a weekend.
CALEB
Because every time I came, you managed me. The visiting hours. The approved topics. Like I was a guest in my own mother's dying.
JUNE
Somebody had to make the schedule, Caleb. Somebody had to be the one who knew which pills were morning and which were night.
CALEB
(quietly)
And she loved you for it. And she was also afraid of you at the end. Those are both true.
JUNE
Don't you dare. You don't get to fly in twice a year and tell me who she was afraid of.
CALEB
Open it, then. If you're so sure it says what you think it says. Open it.
JUNE
The house. She promised me the house. I gave up the apartment, the job in Chicago. There was an understanding.
CALEB
She wanted it sold. Split three ways. You, me, and the hospice fund. It's all in there, notarized.
JUNE
(a hollow laugh)
Three ways. She was dying in my arms while you were on a beach, and she split it three ways.
CALEB
It was a work trip, June. And I offered to move her near me. Twice. You said she'd never survive the flight. Maybe that was true. Maybe you needed it to be true.
JUNE
(very quiet)
Get out of her kitchen.
CALEB
It's not her kitchen anymore. That's the whole point. It's just a house now, and it's half empty, and we are all that's left.
JUNE
(the envelope lowering)
I keep waiting to hear her on the stairs. Isn't that stupid. Three days and I still set out two cups.
CALEB
I know. I ordered her tea by accident at the airport. Stood there holding it like an idiot.
JUNE
We open it together. Tomorrow. With the lawyer, in the daylight, like she'd want.
CALEB
Tomorrow. I'll make the tea.

How to play this scene
The beats
- June opens with cold evidence, not tears: "Your name on the front. Her handwriting."
- The catch comes fast: "You just told me what's in it without me opening it" - Caleb has given himself away.
- Old grievances erupt both ways: "I was here every day in March. You couldn't find a weekend" against his "you managed me."
- Grief finally breaks the fight open on "I still set out two cups," and the scene turns from accusation to truce.
Playing it
Both want to be the one who loved her right, and the will is the scoreboard. June's objective is to be proven the deserving child; Caleb's is to make her admit the caregiving had control in it too. Keep the menace quiet, because the scariest lines here are the softest ones like "Get out of her kitchen," and let shared loss, not a winner, be what ends it.
Common mistakes
- Shouting the whole scene; the low, controlled lines are the frightening ones.
- Playing one sibling as the villain, when both have a real case, which is what makes it hurt.
- Staying in anger and skipping the grief turn, so the truce at "I'll make the tea" is unearned.
