How to use it

  1. Paste or type your script into the box (or drop a .txt file).
  2. Pick a mode: Auto-scroll rolls the text at a speed you set; Voice-activated follows your voice; Manual lets you tap or press Space to advance line by line (no mic, no download, works offline).
  3. Adjust font size, and turn on Mirror flip if you are bouncing the screen off a teleprompter beam splitter.
  4. Turn on Record video to self-tape while you read; the recording downloads to your device when you stop, and never leaves it. For the full framing, lighting, and delivery walkthrough, see our self-tape prep guide.
  5. Press Full screen and start reading.

Why voice-activated beats timed scrolling

A timer-based teleprompter scrolls at a fixed speed, so you are always chasing it or waiting for it. When you pause for a breath, an emotional beat, or a fluffed line, the text keeps moving. Voice-activated mode tracks the words you actually say and moves the script to match, so the line you need is always in front of you. It starts instantly with no download, and English readers can choose a fully offline engine when they want audio to stay entirely on their device. If browser speech is unavailable, Manual mode is always ready with no download.

A teleprompter with video recording built in

Most free teleprompters make you run a separate camera app. Here, recording is one toggle: a small self-tape style camera preview appears while you read, and when you stop, the take downloads straight to your device as a video file. Nothing is uploaded, there is no watermark, and it works in every mode, including manual. If you are an actor taping auditions, pair it with our free practice scenes or rehearse your own sides with an AI scene partner that reads the other roles.

Frequently asked questions

Is this teleprompter really free?

Yes. It is free to use with no signup, no watermark, and no limit on how long your script can be within reason. It runs in your browser, so you can use it on a laptop or a phone.

How does the voice-activated mode work?

As you read, it highlights the current line and scrolls to keep it in view, so you never scroll faster or slower than you actually speak. The default starts instantly with your browser's built-in speech recognition; in some browsers (such as Chrome) that audio may be processed by the browser vendor's speech service. English also has an optional fully offline mode that runs a speech model entirely in your browser so your audio never leaves your device.

Do I need to download anything for voice mode?

No. The default voice-follow engine uses your browser's built-in speech recognition and starts instantly with nothing to download. English readers can choose the fully offline engine, which loads a one-time speech model (about 194MB) and caches it for next time. If browser speech is unavailable, the tool lets you choose the English offline mode or Manual mode; it never starts a large download on its own.

What if voice mode will not load or my connection is slow?

Use Manual mode. You tap the script or press Space or the arrow keys to advance line by line. There is no microphone and nothing to download, so it works instantly in any browser, including on a slow connection or in browsers where the built-in speech service is blocked. It also pairs with video recording.

Can I use it as a teleprompter for Zoom or video calls?

Yes. Open the teleprompter in a browser window next to your call, shrink it, and place it just under your webcam so your eyes stay near the lens. Voice-activated mode scrolls as you talk, so you never have to reach for the keyboard mid-sentence. It works the same for Google Meet, Teams, and recorded presentations.

Is it good for actors and self-tapes?

Yes, as a delivery and timing check. Run your sides or monologue on it to hear your real pace, then wean off it, since casting wants you off-book. For learning the words, use the free line memorizer, and to rehearse a scene with the other lines read aloud on cue, try Line Echo's AI scene partner.

Can I record video with this teleprompter?

Yes, and it is free. Turn on Record video and the tool shows a small self-tape camera preview while you read in either mode. When you stop, the recording downloads straight to your device as a video file. Nothing is ever uploaded, and there is no watermark or signup.
